Women thieves strip naked to escape public wrath

Mumbai, Aug 26 (IANS) In a bizarre incident, three women suspected of stealing mobile phones, stripped to the buff Tuesday to escape the wrath of angry people here, the police said. The incident took place in Konkan Nagar tenements in northwest suburb of Jogeshwari around 6 a.m., according to Bharati Patil, a lady police constable at the Dindoshi police station.
When Patil returned home from night duty at her flat in new MHADA police quarters, she saw three naked women and two children running around in the
area with a huge, noisy crowd chasing them.
She stopped one of the women and waved the menacing crowd to a halt. “First, I ordered her to wear her clothes lying nearby and then called the police wireless for help,” Patil told IANS.
Later, the tenement dwellers came and narrated the sequence of events to Patil.
On Monday evening, four unknown women had sneaked into Konkan Nagar, begging for food and alms.
Seeing the door of a house open, they picked up four mobile phones belonging to the family of one Vithoba Chavan, who lodged a police complaint.
On Tuesday morning, three of them again came begging in the same neighbourhood, this time carrying an infant in the arms and another 6-year-old boy in tow.
However, Hitali Chavan, a local resident, recognized them as the same women who had come the previous evening and disappeared before Vithoba family’s mobile phones were found stolen. She went and alerted him.
Vithoba and others from the neighbourhood went after the alleged thieves and found them begging in the adjacent lane.
When confronted by the angry crowd, the trio immediately removed all their clothes and attempted to escape, but the people followed them.
Although there were nearly 200 people, none dared to touch them. However, they managed to grab the minor boy and ordered them to surrender.
In an attempt to secure the boy from the crowd, his mother picked up stones and inflicted injuries on self and banged her head on the ground, even as her two associates managed to escape in the opposite direction, without anything on.
Then Patil arrived and she slapped the woman. She ordered her to wear her clothes.
The woman was handed over to Meghwadi police station but senior police inspector Jaspal Singh Ragi said he was not aware of what happened to her later.
Independent sources said that the woman created a similar ruckus inside the police station and tried to remove her clothes. Apprehending complications, the police quietly allowed her to take her children and go away.
