Sekolah Katolik Pertama di Inggris yang Akan Dirubah Menjadi Sekolah Islam

Sebuah sekolah dasar Katolik yang terletak di kota Blackburn, Inggris, yaitu Sacred Heart Primary, sepertimya akan menjadi sekolah Katolik pertama di Inggris yang akan dirubah menjadi sekolah agama Islam. Perubahan itu dikarenakan jumlah populasi pelajar Katolik yang menurun drastis di sekolah tersebut.

Sepuluh tahun lalu, di sekolah itu, pelajar Katolik masih menjadi mayoritas. Namun tahun ini merosot hanya tinggal tiga persen. Keuskupan setempat mengakui bahwa sekolah itu tak bisa lagi melayani kebutuhan masyarakat. Sekolah itu mesti menyediakan kepala sekolah Katolik dan 10 persen kurikulum pendidikan berbasis Katolik.

Berdasarkan undang-undang saat ini, dewan kota setempat harus efektif menjalankan kompetisi untuk mencari organisasi baru untuk menjalankan sekolah tersebut. Nah, Masjid Tauheedul Islam di Blackburn yang sudah memiliki sekolah menengah khusus pelajar putri sudah menyatakan ketertarikannya untuk mengambil alih sekolah Katolik tersebut.

Kepala Sekolah Menengah Putri Tauheedul Islam, Hamid Patel mengatakan, ”Mengingat sebagian besar murid sekolah (Katolik) itu adalah Muslim maka masuk akal bila kita terlibat dengan sekolah itu.”

”Kami membutuhkan informasi lebih lanjut dari otoritas setempat, tapi jika masyarakat dan sekolah itu menginginkan kita terlibat, maka kami tertarik,” tambahnya.

Saat ini di Inggris sedang terjadi peningkatan permintaan untuk sekolah-sekolah negeri Islam. Populasi Muslim di Inggris meningkat pesat menjadi sekitar 2,5 juta jiwa antara 2004-2008, tapi hanya ada 11 sekolah Islam yang telah dibuka dengan dana negara kerajaan itu. .

Dalam kasus itu, Keuskupan Salford mengatakan dewan kota setempat tak lagi percaya kepada pengelola sekarang untuk melanjutkan sekolah tersebut. Pasalnya, saat ini jumlah murid Katolik yang ada hanya tersisa lima atau enam orang.

Direktur Pendidikan Keuskupan setempat, Geraldine Bradbury, mengakui pihaknya tidak pernah mengalami perubahan drastis seperti ini. Karena itu, dia tampaknya rela untuk melepaskan pengelolaan terhadap sekolah itu. ”Akan sangat salah bagi kita untuk bersikeras mempertahankan sekolah komunitas seperti itu.”./

Naked woman rescued from river

A ROWING coach helped police rescue a woman who was swimming naked in the Thames in Henley.

Will Morgan, 24, used his Henley Rowing Club launch to take an officer on to the water to join the search.

Police were called to Marsh Lock at 4.35pm on Saturday, July 10 — during Henley Festival — after being told the woman was in danger from heavy river traffic.

A couple who were near the lock in Wargrave Road also volunteered to help the search.

Mr Morgan, from Caversham, said: “Together with my father, I had been coaching the junior girls and had just got back to the club when the police arrived and asked for help.


“First we checked around the River and Rowing Museum but then the officer got a call saying the woman had been seen at Marsh Lock. We made our way there but by the time we arrived she was out of the water.”

Pc Andrew Kelly, from London Valley police station, said: “We had to be resourceful to deal with this incident as it happened at a busy time.”

He said colleagues in Henley and from other agencies were dealing with a light aircraft crash at Peppard, which also meant the force helicopter was unavailable.

Pc Kelly said two officers finally located the woman at 5.15pm. She was confused and sunburnt and it was thought that she had been in the water for several hours.

She was taken to Loddon Valley police station where it was discovered she was a missing person from Bath who suffers from mental health problems.

Pc Kelly said: “Thanks to the officers and members of the public she is safe. We really are grateful to the people who helped us — without their valuable assistance I am not sure the situation would have had the same conclusion.”
